Memorial Day has come to mean the beginning of summer, a time for picnics and barbecues, and a holiday to gather around the family. Today lets remember that the happiness and freedom we enjoy is a product of the real cause for the holiday: the sacrifice made by men and women who have fought and died for the freedoms and liberties Americans hold dear. Memorial Day is a time to remember that the American way of life does not come cheap but rather has been purchased by the lives and blood of so many who have sacrificed for us to live free and happily now.
Poem by Mountain Wisdom says it all:
To the Unknown Soldier, a thank you
I do not know your name, although you were once a mother’s son.
She must have waited patiently for some word from you and for your safe return.
Your race, politics, creed, they matter not to me,
as you and the woman who let you go sacrificed everything for my liberty.
A prayer of thanks, I say for you and for the mother, who lost a son,
And for the rights I have, that your sacrifice won.
