Summer’s here!!! A great time to enjoy the outdoors whether you enjoy hiking, gardening, or swimming. Usually, I am the one staying away from tanning and creating the highest SPF sunscreen I can. In fact, last year I was able to go to the Florida beach and leave without any tan lines due to my sunscreen. I am very light skinned so this was a wonderful achievement for me.
Imagine my surprise when an audience member asked about DIY tanning oil. So, after some research and information from a friend, I was able to come up with a few recipes for a safer tanning oil.
One of the pluses to creating your own is that you can make as much or as little as you need. Then there’s the obvious, you know exactly what is in it. I have sensitive skin so I am able to use ingredients that won’t break me out and I can use whatever scent I prefer.
I won’t go over the ingredients that you need to stay away from, I’ll save that for another time. If you are interested in learning more now, you can always check the ingredients atwww.ewg.org. Instead, let me guide you with which ones are beneficial for your skin and why.
I would like to say that I do NOT promote laying out in the sun or staying out for long periods especially during the hottest part of the day. It’s best to stay in shady areas and only for ten to twenty minutes at a time. No matter how great or natural your suntan oil or sunscreen is there is always a risk of skin damage and cancer. So, be very cautious.
First, you need to recognize your skin type. Different oils work better for different skin types as well as different SPF factors. Then you will need to decide what scent are you looking for. Here are a few options you can choose from. Don’t worry about the low SPF in some of them because you can add other ingredients that will raise the SPF in them. This is important since some oils are more apt to clog pores than others. The rating ranges from 0-5. The lower the number the least likely it is to clog your pores. It’s just a reference since some people are fortunate to be able to use any oil without any issues so just keep that in mind.
Almond Oil: Sweet almond oil is full of Vitamins A & E fighting free radicals, reducing premature aging and protects from UV damage. It has a low SPF of 4.
Apricot Seed Oil: This oil contains gamma linoleic acid that is useful for toning and firming your skin. It contains Vitamins A &E which slow down the aging process. It has an SPF of 2-6.
Avocado Oil: If you have dry skin this is a great oil for you. It is also full of fatty acids, beta carotene, protein, lecithin, and vitamins such as A, D, and E that will moisturize and protect your skin from damaging UV rays. It also increases collagen metabolism. It has an SPF of 15.
Carrot seed: Also great for all skin types it’s rich in Vitamins A & E. It balances the moisture in your skin and is great for dry or mature skin. It has an awesome SPF of 38-40.
Coconut Oil: This is a great option for those with sensitive skin. It has plenty of fatty acids that offer the benefits of Omega 3 in your skin. It also has Vitamin E which is great for protecting the skin and prevents premature aging. Let’s not forget the antibacterial qualities as well. It has an SPF of 5-10.
Olive Oil: Not many people can use this oil for fear of clogging pores but it is full of Vitamins A, D, E, & K. It’s also very moisturizing for those with very dry skin and protects from UV rays. It has an SPF of 8.
Raspberry: This oil is also safe for those with sensitive skin. It’s full of Vitamin E reducing free radicals that cause premature aging. High in linoleic acid which aids in cell rejuvenation and reduces the clogging of pores. It offers UVA protection with the SPF of 28-50 and UVB protection with an SPF of 8.
Rosehip Seed Oil: Rich in Vitamin A fighting against aging. Molecules so small it can penetrate deep within the layers of your skin improving moisture and collagen while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It does not have much of an SPF but blended with an oil that does you can have added benefits. It does help reduce phototoxicity.
Sesame Oil: This thick gooey oil is one that you won’t need too much of, meaning your tanning oil goes a long way. It’s great for moisturizing your skin, repairing damaged skin, and slowing the aging process down. It’s a great addition to other oils but does have a low SPF of 4. It’s a lower cost option compared to many of the others.
Walnut Oil: This is another great oil for those suffering from skin conditions such as psoriasis, and eczema. It prevents premature aging also. It has an SPF of 4.
Wheat Germ Oil: This oil moisturizes and heals dry skin. Rich in Vitamin E which aids in reduces skin damage, fights free radicals, supports healthy collagen formation and maintaining an even skin tone. It has an SPF of 20.
Aloe Vera and Green Tea Extract: Green tea and aloe vera are full of antioxidants, which help to prevent sunburn side effects and fight off cancer. You’ll offer your skin a protective layer that won’t block your pores. The ingredients can also help to soothe damaged skin and promote healing. If you have dry or oily skin, you can also balance out the body responses to promote naturally soft and smooth skin.
So now you know which oil is best for your skin type and you can use more than one for added benefits as well as added SPF protection.
One of the best reasons I enjoy creating my own is I control how much scent and which scent I want to use. So, remember that you don’t have to use these exact essential oils. You can use what you prefer but make sure you:
DO NOT use citrus oils as they can cause sun sensitivity.
Here are a few recipes you can try:
For a darker tan, look at this tropical oil:
A cup of coconut oil
8 tsp of walnut oil, avocado oil, and sesame oil
A few drops of coconut essential oil and vanilla essential oils
If you use regular coconut oil it will harden below 74 degrees but you can rub it on like butter. If you prefer liquid oil then use fractionated coconut oil.
For dry skin:
8 tsp of avocado oil, walnut oil, wheat germ oil, and sesame oil
A few drops of calendula oil and patchouli essential oil.
NOTE: Calendula oil has great antifungal and antibacterial properties for healing wounds, soothing eczema, and relieving diaper rash.
The oils in this blend deeply moisturize and condition skin, protecting it from free radical damage and aiding to regenerate and repair sun and other damage.
Moisturizing Tan Oil
§ 50% Red Raspberry Oil
§ 20% Coconut Oil
§ 5% Carrot Seed Oil
§ 20% Apricot Seed or Rosehip Oil
§ 3% Vitamin E Oil (or Olive or Avocado Oil)
§ 2% Essential Oils of Ylang Ylang, Rose, Neroli, or other oils.
§ Blend oil and store in glass bottle preferably (or non-PBA plastic). Store out of direct sunlight and apply before sun exposure.
§ Apply 10 to 15 minutes before sun exposure – for a deep dark tan and silky-smooth skin!
Nourishing Tan Oil
· 1/4 cup olive oil
· 2 TBSP avocado oil
· 1/2 tsp raspberry seed oil
· 1/2 tsp carrot seed oil
· 10 drops sandalwood essential oil
· 10 drops lavender essential oil
