Summer is upon us and for many this means being outdoors more than not. I recently took a trip to Florida with my son and grandchildren. While my son and his lady were scuba diving, the grandchildren and I played at the beach. We had a wonderful time but a day at the beach can become painful if you are fair skinned.
For a couple of years now I have wanted to make a sunscreen that didn’t have all of those toxic chemicals in it. Such as oxybenzone, octinoxate, retinyl palmitate, homosalate, octocrylene and paraben preservatives. I just didn’t know how to gauge the SPF factor so I tried to buy the least dangerous sunscreen I could find.
This year I decided after a bit of research to give it a try. The first one I made was in a thick lotion form that I could add to a deodorant style container. We put this one on first and had it on during the hottest part of the day. We never reapplied it and it worked great.
I was so excited that the first one was a success that I couldn’t wait to try the second one. I made the second sunscreen in a liquid form to add to a spray bottle. After five hours of using the first one I decided to use the spray on the inside of my calves, lower arms and chest. After about two hours I began to turn red. However, the areas that were never reapplied with the lotion nor sprayed with the mist, looked as if they had never been outside.
While I was disappointed in the spray, the lotion not only protected my skin but my skin felt super soft after using. It didn’t take long to make and the ingredients were easy to find on amazon.
The only thing I would do different is change the container used. If I am going to the beach, then I would pour the lotion into a lotion container. If I am going to use the sunscreen somewhere it will not be sitting in the sun, I would prefer the deodorant style container. You can refrigerate if it becomes too soft in the deodorant container.
Here is the recipe and I hope you have many, many hours of enjoyment in the sun this summer. Stay safe.
Beurre de Soleil (water proof)
1/4 c. Avocado oil
1/4 c. Coconut oil
1/4 c. Beeswax
1/4 c. Shea butter
10 d. Myrrh essential oil
15 d. Carrot seed essential oil
2 T. Zinc oxide (optional) You can add more myrrh instead (up to 40 drops) I used the Zinc Oxide.
Use a double broiler or place ingredients in a mason jar in water in a saucepan. Add avocado oil, coconut oil, and beeswax to container. Stir on low heat until all ingredients are melted. Remove from heat and add shea butter and essential oils. Stir until shea is melted (do not add before or heat will make shea grainy). If you are adding zinc oxide, add now and whisk until there are no clumps. Transfer to storage container and use as you would your regular sunscreen.
Make sure you use the non-nano uncoated zinc oxide. The particles are too big to get into your blood stream. It will protect your skin and will not break down in the sun. It is the same zinc oxide that is used in calamine lotions and diaper rash creams. (Wear a mask to prevent the inhalation of zinc oxide while mixing.)
If it becomes too soft in the deodorant style container you can refrigerate it until it hardens again, then take out.
