Is Your Sunscreen Safe?

Over the years, most of us have heard how important sunscreen is needed to protect us from cancer as well as other sun damaging effects on our bodies. However, most companies are using ingredients that are dangerous to us and we slather it all over our bodies.

Here is a short list of ingredients that are found in many sunscreens that you should avoid:

Avobenzone is oil soluble and used to absorb the full spectrum of UVA rays. The problem with avobenzone is that it degrades in the sun, causing free radicals which may increase our skin cancer risk.

Homosalate is an organic compound used as an UV filter. It is also a potential endocrine disruptor and may impact hormones. It also enhances absorption of pesticides in the body.

Octocrylene is an organic compound that absorbs UVB and UVA rays and protects the skin from direct DNA damage. However, it also acts as a photo-synthesizer increasing the production of free radicals.

Oxybenzone is also an organic compound that is soluble in most organic solvents. It absorbs UVB and UVA rays but is a weak chemical UV absorber. It acts as a photo-stabilizer and is used to preserve the integrity of the product. However, it causes photo-sensitivity and increases the production of free radicals. It also has the ability to attack DNA cells.

The reason many ingredients get approved is because they are given a certain percentage that they may not go over in the product for it to be considered safe. For example: Oxybenzone may not exceed more than ten percent in the product for it to be deemed safe to use.

Fragrance in any product can be very dangerous because they do NOT have to list the ingredients used to make the fragrance. The reason companies get away with only listing “fragrance” on the label is because they claim it as a trade secret so other companies are unable to copy their proprietary blends. However, these scents are made from harmful chemicals such as benzene derivatives, aldehydes and phthalates as well as many other toxins. These toxins are often responsible for birth defects, nervous-system disorders, allergies and cancer.

It doesn’t make sense that you would rub on sunscreen to protect you from skin cancer and other dangers from the sun while rubbing dangerous toxins into your body does it? So what can we do about it? Well, look for brands that use only natural ingredients such as extra virgin olive oil, beeswax, jojoba oil, cocoa butter, shea butter,  green tea extract, coconut oil, eucalyptus oil, sunflower seed oil, zinc oxide, aloe vera juice, and natural essential oils for fragrance. There are many brands out there that are all-natural, many are vegan friendly as well as environment friendly and safe for you to use on your loved ones.

A good tip I use when looking at ingredients is that if I wouldn’t put it in my body then I am not going to put it on my body either. We know that many ingredients that we put on our skin actually get absorbed through our skin and into our bloodstream. So I have a rule that when I look at ingredients I ask myself, would I eat this? Or would I want this in my bloodstream? If I wouldn’t then I certainly wouldn’t put it on my skin either.

3 John 1:2 NIV

2 Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.
