Angels: Do They Really Exist?

Angels: Do They Really Exist?

Have you ever wondered about angels? Where did they come from or do they even really exist? In the thirty-nine books of the Old Testament, angels are mentioned one hundred and eight times. In the twenty-seven books of the New Testament, angels are mentioned one hundred and sixty-five times.

So what is an Angel? According to the Bible, angels are spiritual beings. (Psalm 148:1-14) They were created by God from the very beginning of time to be angels and their existence is to glorify and serve God. (Gen. 1:1-31) They are a higher level of creation than man and speak both God’s language and all languages of the earth.  Since they do not die or pro-create it is believed they were created at the same time and therefore are not different ages. They were created as mature beings so we know that there are not any baby angels. Just like us, they have free will as we have seen with Lucifer and his followers “a third of the angels” who rebelled against God. (Eze. 12:19)

What is the purpose of angels? The name angel means messenger and many times in the Bible we see where God has sent angels to give someone a message. One of the most notable times of this would be when God sent angels to announce the coming of Jesus, both at his birth and when he had come back to life. Not to mention when the angel Gabriel was sent to tell Mary about the special baby she would give birth to. (Matt 1:18-21)

Angels are also mighty and powerful warriors for God. (Rev 12:7-9) Depicts the story of the Archangel Michael and God’s angels battling against Lucifer and the fallen angels.

According to (1 Cor. 4:9), angels enjoy watching history unfold. They were here to see creation and they have continued to watch ever since and they celebrate and rejoice when someone becomes a Christian. (Luke 15:10)

Many times the Bible speaks of angels as guardians who protect and comfort us. (1 Kings 19:4-8) when Elijah flees from Jezebel and (Daniel 6:1-28) the plot against Daniel are two good examples. However, nowhere in the Bible does it say that everyone has a guardian angel, (Hebrews 1:14) proclaims that angels attend to only those who have made Christ their savior.

However, it is up to God who he sends angels to. We know that only God knows our future and that it is possible for Him to help those who may not be saved yet but will be in the future.

Angels most important role is to praise and worship God. (Rev. 4:8) and (Rev. 7:11-12) describe this. (Rev. 5:11-12) describe over a hundred million angels praising God. It’s not just the angels but all of creation that is to praise God as well according to (Psalms 148).

So now we know there are many roles that angels take on and that they have been here from the very beginning and they only do as God commands. There is so much more to learn about angels but we will leave that for another day. Stay tuned.

May grace and blessings be in your path.
