How to Make Kinetic Sand
Updated: Dec 23, 2019
This winter has been particularly odd for us in the south. We usually do have mild winters but I must admit this winter has been extremely mild but wet. Meanwhile, up north my relatives have had it pretty cold with some winter storms. I really feel for the young children who are cooped up indoors and the parents can have a tough time trying to keep them entertained. Here is a pretty easy activity that can bring the beach fun indoors and cheer up the young and give them some hands-on creativity.
Kinetic Sand is toy sand made from sand and silicone in order for it to be molded just like beach sand but it doesn’t dry out. With just a few ingredients that you probably already have at home, you can create it yourself.
2 c. dry sand
½ T. liquid soap
11/2 – 2 c. water
Make sure you have dry sand and pick all the large pieces out. Sifting through a screen is helpful. Then, mix the sand and cornstarch together thoroughly. In a separate container, mix the soap and water. Next, add one cup of the soapy water to the dry mixture and blend well. Now, add small amounts of the liquid with the sand a little at a time and mixing it well. Your goal is to have consistent damp sand that can hold its shape for about a minute. If the sand is too wet you can add more sand or allow it to dry out a bit.
TIP: If you store your sand in an airtight container it can last a long time.
One mom made enough to store in a large bucket with a lid and used a small baby pool to allow the children to play indoors during a winter storm. You can also use a small box or mat to use at the table.
This is easy to do, fun to play with, and a great way to bring the beach to your little ones even during the winter.
