Make Everything Old New Again

I think of January as not just the start of a new year but a fresh start for everything. I use the first few days of January for going through the pantry and seeing what needs replaced.

A large part of my kitchen cabinets and pantry keeps my apothecary essentials. I check that all of my essential and carrier oils are good and if I need to reorder. I check the inventory and freshness of my butters, beeswax and herbs. I know that it’s time to make new tinctures and infused oils and spend the first week of January doing so.

Of course when keeping these items it’s important to label and date them and check everything monthly but I use January to make a clean sweep. I take it all out, reorganize and make everything old new again.

This week I lived in the kitchen and made oil infusions of coffee, calendula, rose, and lavender, just to name a few. I realized I needed to reorder more fresh peppermint, elder flowers and elderberries and did so. I already had vinegar infused with lemons to make my household cleaners so that saved time.

After years of living with sensitive skin and spending thousands on products that work well with my skin I realized I can do better by making my own products. I realized that many of the ingredients in the products that irritated my skin so much were the fillers and preservatives used to stretch the ingredients further and give them a longer shelf life.

By making my own, I use fresh ingredients and the percentage of the actual ingredient is much greater than in store bought so I am getting a more potent product that delivers excellent results. The aroma that fills my home while making everything is also a huge plus.

This year I would like to begin a garden and grow all that I can in my zone and have even fresher ingredients. I would like to dry and press my own ingredients and therefore I will be learning more about presses so stay tuned.

I never cared much for taking medicine and would suffer through migraines and colds just to avoid them. It never failed that when I did take a medication I always had some type of side effect to deal with. Then after pharmacology class and learning even more about these side effects I realized there must be a better way and became more involved in holistic health. Now I feel better and can handle my own healthcare needs without those nasty side effects.

Yes, I still go to the doctor when absolutely necessary and even take a prescription if crucial but if I can handle it on my own that’s exactly what I prefer to do. So while I enjoy discussing many other topics you now know why I speak so highly of a holistic lifestyle. While many people are creating their resolutions for weight loss or more income, mine is for a healthier year so that I can live longer to spoil the grandchildren that I have been so blessed to have.

Isaiah 40:30-31King James Version (KJV)

30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:

31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
