Dubenard's Luna Moth

Today while reading the National Geographic Kids’ Edition I learned about the Dubenard Luna Moth. This species of luna moth resides in parts of China, Laos, and Vietnam. They are one of 1500 species which include giant silk moths, royal moths, and even emperor moths. They start out as caterpillars and eat off of the leaves of trees and shrubs at night and rest during the day. After about a month of filling up on leaves, it will go into the cocoon for about three weeks. When it emerges from the cocoon, it will live only a week because it does not have a mouth or digestive system. It is a favorite snack for bats and many moths are able to get away by spinning their tails and disorienting the bat.
